Royal Botanic Gardens
Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens was established in 1846 by Lt. Governor Charles LaTrobe. Early Directors of the Gardens included the famous botanist Baron Ferdinand von Mueller who also established the National Herbarium of Victoria. Succeeded in 1873 by William Guilfoyle, he developed the scenic panoramas and sweeping lawns that the gardens are famous for today. The Royal Botanic Gardens is an iconic symbol of Melbourne and a truly world class botanic collection in a wonderful setting.
